Detour Method Online (DMO) FAQs

Detour Method Online is an online training unlike any other, so it’s expected that you’ll have some questions about how it works. Review the FAQs below to make sure DMO is the right fit for you or go back to the course page.

  • I’m not a yoga teacher. Can I still take this course?
YES! We’ve designed this course with both students and teachers in mind. As a practitioner, you’ll benefit from the many lessons that focus on waking up different areas of the body, giving you new material to integrate into your normal practice or routine. The checks for understanding along the way will help to ensure that you’re not just going through the motions – you’ll actually know WHY you’re doing things a certain way and how you can continue to progress through these movements in a way that is best for your body.
  • I’ve been teaching for ages. Will I learn anything new from DMO?
That’s going to depend on a) what you’re looking for and b) what you’ve already done. If you’ve been immersed in non-yoga trainings in the past and have already learned how to integrate mobility training, strength work and non-linear movement into your classes, then you likely already know much of what we’re offering here. But if you’re relatively new to the movement world, with most of your experience coming from 200HR and 300HR teacher trainings, then YES – you need this training. Even if you are somewhat familiar with the “other stuff” like FRC and Yoga Tune-Up, this course will help you figure out how to weave everything together in a way that is authentic and informed.
  • When does the course start?
The course is available on an ongoing basis. The only caveat to that is we can only support so many students at any one time, so you may encounter periods where registration is temporarily paused.
  • If I pay now do I need to start the course right away?

You have a four-month window from the time of registration that applies to getting your work submitted for feedback and attending office hours for Q+A. This four-month period only applies to the live, interactive elements of DMO—it does not apply to course content. You retain access to course content indefinitely!

If you wish to snag a spot now but aren’t able to dive into the course immediately, rest assured that four months still gives you plenty of wiggle room to get everything done. In the past, students made their way through the same amount of material in 6-8 weeks. So if there are some weeks (or even a month) where DMO time is hard to come by, the four-month window should still provide some breathing space to get everything done.

  • How much time can I expect to spend on completing DMO?

The time commitment per week will depend on your schedule and learning style. Some people dive right in and devour the content, spending about 5 hours/week on the course and finishing it within a month. Others prefer to take their time and may spend some weeks doing no DMO work whatsoever. Previous grads of DMO have completed the course within 6 - 8 weeks.

You’ll have 4 months to get through the content if you wish to receive feedback on the 4 course assignments. That said, you never lose access to the content—you retain access to the entire course indefinitely. The four months only applies to one-to-one interaction with our team, as well as the ability to attend office hours.

  • What are the minimum system requirements to access online course content?

Course content is presented through pre-recorded videos streaming from Vimeo to our Canvas platform. Because DMO is built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. For best performance, Canvas should be accessed using the most up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Verify that the browser you are currently using is up to date here:

We recommend using a computer with at least 1GB of RAM and having access to a minimum stable speed of 5 Mbps or faster in order to stream the high quality videos. Visit (on mobile or desktop) to get an estimate for how fast your internet speed is running. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.

  • Can I take this course on a mobile device?
The Canvas interface was optimized for desktop displays, so using devices with smaller screens such as phones may not provide as pleasant an experience. While it is possible to access the course on phones and tablets (in landscape mode) when running the most recent version of Safari (iOS) and Chrome (Android) on your mobile device, we encourage you to use a laptop or desktop computer when possible.
  • Who are the instructors in this course?

Cecily will lead you through pre-recorded videos with Jenn by her side demonstrating all things movement along the way. The Detour Maps and Audio Classes were also created by Cecily. The Workbook Answer Key that accompanies the questions posed throughout each module is a collaboration between Cecily, Jenn, our resident anatomy hero, Drew Hume and Detour graduate Robin Hurlow.

Cecily and your District Leaders will be active in the online discussion space. Previously known as Team Leaders, District Leaders will review your submitted assignments and lead live online office hours. When you register, you will be assigned to a District Leader who becomes your mentor throughout the training. You’ll be paired according to time zone and language.

As enrollment in DMO grows, so too will the number of District Leaders you have access to.

  • When are office hours and how do they work?

Office hours are led by DMO District Leaders via Zoom. They take place weekly, on a rotating schedule to accommodate different time zones and languages. As of June 2021, the office hour schedule is as follows:

    • Tuesdays: 10am-12pm CET / 5-7am ET (English, Dutch, German, conversational French)
    • Wednesdays: 9-11am CDMX / 10-12pm ET (English, Spanish)
    • Thursdays: 2-4pm MT / 5-7pm ET (English)

The Zoom link (which will be the same for all office hours sessions) is provided to you in the course platform as well as in the online discussion space. You’re welcome to attend any office hour window that works for your schedule rather than only attend those led by your District Leader. To calculate when these office hours take place in your time zone, here’s a handy conversion tool.

  • Is the online discussion space on Facebook?
Nope! The private DMO Think Tank is housed on Mighty Networks, which means you won’t get sucked into the void of social media while trying to connect with peers in the course.
  • Is this training eligible for CECs?
Yes! DMO is eligible to receive Continuing Education Credits (CECs) through canfitpro. DMO is also eligible for Yoga Australia Continuing Development points.
  • Will I receive a certificate for this training?

Yes once you’ve completed all four modules and your assessments have been reviewed successfully, you will receive a digital certificate of participation. Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.

If you wish to receive feedback on assignments from the team you’ll need to submit all 4 (one per module) assignments within 4 months of the date you register.

Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory all assessments will have to be reviewed first.

  • What currency is the price in?
Pricing currency depends on location. If you are purchasing from outside of Canada, the cost is in USD. If you are purchasing within Canada, or from Australia or New Zealand, the cost is in CAD.
  • What is the refund policy?

If you change your mind or discover that this course really isn’t what you need right now, we get it. We also know that life happens, and that circumstances can arise to keep you from participating in this training in the way you first imagined. That’s why we stand by our policy to refund you within 14 days of your registration date, no questions asked.

If, after those initial 14 days, something changes and you’re not able to complete the course work within the 4-month period, extensions can be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please note that extensions longer than one month may be subject to an additional fee.

  • Is this training tax deductible?
If you’re a self-employed yoga teacher/movement instructor/coach you should be able to expense the cost of this course. We will provide you with an official sales receipt for your records.
