You’re no stranger to the world of movement. When you’re not on your mat practicing, you’re likely finding a way to learn more about the body, biomechanics and the nervous system. You follow some amazing movers on social media. Your bookshelf is stacked with resources that keep you up-to-date on hot topics like pain science, flexibility training and somatic exploration.
There’s no shortage of information in your head. And yet, when you attempt to combine everything you’re learning with what you already know and love - yoga! - things feel disconnected.
Detour Method Online bridges the gap between what’s typically taught in 200HR yoga teacher training programs and everything else you need to know about moving with integrity.
Whether you consider yourself a movement enthusiast or a movement educator, DMO will ask you to start thinking critically about how we view, talk about and teach yoga asana. Together, we’ll tackle questions like:
This course will challenge you to continually question what you’re doing (on and off the mat) and why you’re doing it. Because we know what you’re capable of, your instructors won’t settle for mediocrity. There’s never been a more important time to stand apart from the masses. Commit to Detouring from the mainstream and you’ll have all the support needed to succeed on this new, exciting trajectory.
As humans first, educators second, we believe in creating learning environments where it’s ok to question everything and still feel supported along the way.
We also know what it’s like to live and work in injury-riddled bodies. DMO is a reflection of the research, unlearning and relearning that allowed us to arrive at a place where physical movement provides nourishment, not punishment. We’re grateful to our global community of Detourists like you who crave an alternate path of renewed inspiration.
Cecily & Jenn
From spinal articulation and proximal stability to scapular stability and ankle dorsiflexion, this module will have you seeing movement through an entirely new lens.
You’ll integrate everything covered in this module to create the sun-salutations of your dreams, moving with the strength and purpose your body has been longing for.
If you love standing postures and never want to part with your forward bends, this is the module for you
We’ll apply this information to standing postures using “Isolate-Activate-Integrate”, our tried, tested and true Detour approach. You’ll learn to break complex poses down into their component parts and design classes that are not only more accessible but also hotbeds of ‘ah-ha’ moments.
Learn to approach even the most intimidating postures with confidence and ease.
By the end of this module you’ll apply what you’ve learned to the art of sequencing, discovering endless possibilities for planning your self-practice and/or your classes.
This module embraces play and unstructured movement. It’s the perfect antidote to a practice that’s only ever known the confines of a yoga mat or the rigidity of a set sequence. Dive into:
By the end of this module you’ll have not only the skills but the inspiration to turn regular, ho-hum classes into memorable educational experiences.

The time commitment per week will depend on your schedule and learning style. Some people dive right in and devour the content, spending about 5 hours/week on the course and finishing it within a month. Others prefer to take their time and may spend some weeks doing no DMO work whatsoever. Previous grads of DMO have completed the course within 6 - 8 weeks.
You’ll have 4 months to get through the content if you wish to receive feedback on the 4 course assignments. That said, you never lose access to the content—you retain access to the entire course indefinitely. The four months only applies to one-to-one interaction with our team, as well as the ability to attend office hours.
Office hours are led by DMO District Leaders via Zoom. They take place weekly, on a rotating schedule to accommodate different time zones and languages. As of June 2021, the office hour schedule is as follows:
The Zoom link (which will be the same for all office hours sessions) is provided to you in the course platform as well as in the online discussion space. You’re welcome to attend any office hour window that works for your schedule rather than only attend those led by your District Leader. To calculate when these office hours take place in your time zone, here’s a handy conversion tool.
You have a four-month window from the time of registration that applies to getting your work submitted for feedback and attending office hours for Q+A. This four-month period only applies to the live, interactive elements of DMO—it does not apply to course content. You retain access to course content indefinitely!
If you wish to snag a spot now but aren’t able to dive into the course immediately, rest assured that four months still gives you plenty of wiggle room to get everything done. In the past, students made their way through the same amount of material in 6-8 weeks. So if there are some weeks (or even a month) where DMO time is hard to come by, the four-month window should still provide some breathing space to get everything done.
Course content is presented through pre-recorded videos streaming from Vimeo to our Canvas platform. Because DMO is built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. For best performance, Canvas should be accessed using the most up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Verify that the browser you are currently using is up to date here: https://updatemybrowser.org/
We recommend using a computer with at least 1GB of RAM and having access to a minimum stable speed of 5 Mbps or faster in order to stream the high quality videos. Visit https://testmy.net/download (on mobile or desktop) to get an estimate for how fast your internet speed is running. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.
Cecily will lead you through pre-recorded videos with Jenn by her side demonstrating all things movement along the way. The Detour Maps and Audio Classes were also created by Cecily. The Workbook Answer Key that accompanies the questions posed throughout each module is a collaboration between Cecily, Jenn, our resident anatomy hero, Drew Hume and Detour graduate Robin Hurlow.
Cecily and your District Leaders will be active in the online discussion space. Previously known as Team Leaders, District Leaders will review your submitted assignments and lead live online office hours. When you register, you will be assigned to a District Leader who becomes your mentor throughout the training. You’ll be paired according to time zone and language.
As enrollment in DMO grows, so too will the number of District Leaders you have access to.
Yes once you’ve completed all four modules and your assessments have been reviewed successfully, you will receive a digital certificate of participation. Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.
If you wish to receive feedback on assignments from the team you’ll need to submit all 4 (one per module) assignments within 4 months of the date you register.
Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory all assessments will have to be reviewed first.
If you change your mind or discover that this course really isn’t what you need right now, we get it. We also know that life happens, and that circumstances can arise to keep you from participating in this training in the way you first imagined. That’s why we stand by our policy to refund you within 14 days of your registration date, no questions asked.
If, after those initial 14 days, something changes and you’re not able to complete the course work within the 4-month period, extensions can be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please note that extensions longer than one month may be subject to an additional fee.
